CONTENTS*
Gleeditions offers more than an e-book. Harnessing the potential of computers to guide users, our Fully Annotated E-text leads them into unraveling
the elements of great literary works. Included are
- A scholarly approved edition of the
literary text
- Annotations for seven literary elements (Plot, Character, Setting, Style, Theme/Issues, Voice/Point of
View, and Vocabulary)
- Background information, glossary, index, graphics
- Color-coding and interactivity
Gleeditions LLC is literature unbound—cutting-edge technology that brings literary classics into the 21st century, not only by digitizing them but also by using technology to maximize
our understanding of them. Illuminating the text is a fine
assortment of images from individual photographers
and premium collections (e.g., the British Museum, Oregon
Shakespeare Festival, Royal Shakespeare Company,
Stratford Festival).

CAREFULLY PLANTED AND GROWING
We start with a limited release of
titles because we take the time to do the job right.
All of our works are academically endorsed editions
of the texts, annotated comprehensively for the
seven major literary elements listed in Contents
above. Written and peer-reviewed by experts in the
field, the annotations are accompanied by other
illuminating auxiliary material:
- Background in Brief, placing the
work in its historical and literary contexts
- Original/illustrative graphics
(maps, timelines, etc.)
- Celebrated artwork
(paintings/performance photographs, etc.)
- Hyperlinks, as appropriate,
between related passages in a text
- Related video clips of acclaimed performances
We begin with Shakespeare's core plays, plus the
classic American novel Adventures of
Huckleberry Finn. In the coming year, additional
Shakespeare titles will be released, followed by
other literary collections.
The time it takes to create something this
comprehensive reaps benefits:
"This is terrific work,
available to both beginning and advanced students
and wonderfully unobtrusive, that is, making so much
available only if students want it. But the material
is so alluring they WILL want it!"
Professor James Kincaid, USC
THE GLEEDITIONS, LLC TEAM
Founded on three decades of experience producing academic materials, including extensive attention to historical
as well as literary contexts, Gleeditions addresses fundamental educational needs.
The ongoing creative team consists of a core group of technical, academic, and editorial advisors. Providing
oversight for particular subject areas and audiences are Robert Watson, Professor, UCLA English; James Kincaid,
Professor, USC English; and Carol Jago, Secondary-English Instructor Emeritus, 2010
President of NCTE, and Director of the California
Reading and Literature Project at UCLA.
The central development team consists of senior editor Joyce Moss (Phi Beta Kappa, UCLA English; Masters, USC
Instructional Technology); software engineer George Spanos (Masters, CSULB Computer Science); and assistant editors
Diane Mannone (Masters, CSUDH Rhetoric and Composition and Adjunct English Professor) and Lisa Granados (UCLA; Masters candidate, UCI
English). Directed by George Spanos, design of this website is a product, as well, of the creative efforts of Abe Kislevitz and Kaelee Makarick.
Deep appreciation is extended to Kunal Kadakia for
his strategic technical advice to Gleeditions, and to Hilda K. Weisburg
for her real-world feedback on school media needs.
Gratitude for informational content goes to the academic experts who developed the
online editions (for names and credentials, see
the Title Page of each edition). Lastly, we heartily thank the broad mix
of students and teachers who field tested Gleeditions.
GUIDING PHILOSOPHY
Behind this site is a firm belief in the value of looking at the various aspects of a text to comprehend its artistry and
the ideas it conveys. There is, of course, more than one way to analyze a text. What one person sees as Voice/Point of View,
another may see as Themes/Issues. The site does not presume to be definitive. It does, on the other hand, provide tools that
contribute to and help stimulate analysis and mastery of the given text. Although Gleeditions LLC relies on a highly regarded
team of experienced scholars who specialize in the field, we, the developers, realize that other approaches are as legitimate
as ours. Readers with new or different ways of looking at a text, which are supportable by reference to that text, have our
hearty encouragement. We are all part of the same enlightening process.
COMMON CORE TITLES
In 2010 the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers (in collaboaration with teachers, administrators, and subject-matter specialists) developed Common Core State Standards in education. Already adopted by 43 states and territories, these Standards include an English Language Arts Appendix B, which lists literary texts across the genres by grade level.
Gleeditions, in keeping with these Standards and in consultation with its academic consultants in the field, now provides on its site e-ditions of the literary works listed in Appendix B for Grades 9–CCR*. In contrast to Gleeditions interactive online editions, these Common Core e-texts are not newly or fully annotated. Rather they are digitized editions of the print publications recommended in Appendix B that are currently in the public domain. Whenever possible, Gleeditions made available the exact edition specified in Appendix B. If that edition is still in copyright, Gleeditions consulted with its academic specialists to mount the finest available public-domain edition of the text. Finally, to the extent possible, the editors obtained permission to include specified titles still in copyright (e.g., Elie Wiesel’s “Hope, Despair and Memory”).
