yards, yardarm A yard is the long, narrow wooden spar slung at its center form the mast and serving to support and extend a square sail that is bent into it. The yardarm is either of the ends of the yard. It is from these that men were hanged.

yearn 1. To have a strong, often melancholy desire. 2. To feel deep pity, sympathy, or tenderness: yearned over the poor child's fate.
